Golden Rams Fall to Mohawk Valley

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Women's Basketball team fell 65-54 to Mohawk Valley in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division III National Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter and extended the lead to 12-1 halfway through the period.

Mohawk Valley would then use a 12-1 run of their own over the last four minutes to tie the score at 13 apiece at the end of the first quarter.

Mohawk Valley continued the run to start the second quarter and took a 22-15 lead with 6:39 left.

Daron Mainville scored the next eight Golden Ram points, but Mohawk Valley would answer each time to maintain a 28-23 lead.

The deficit grew to eight points, but a three-pointer and layup from Mainville kept the Golden Rams close as they trailed 33-28 at halftime.

Mainville scored 19 of the 28 Golden Ram points in the first half.

Anoka-Ramsey tied the score at 33 apiece to start the third quarter as Mainville scored inside and Chaniya Rogers connected from beyond the three-point line.

Mohawk Valley scored the next four points and eventually rebuilt an eight point lead, 43-35.

A three-pointer from Rashonna Thomas cut the deficit to five with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Anoka-Ramsey would fail to score in the last four minutes of the period, with Mohawk Valley using a 10-0 run to take a 53-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Golden Rams were unable to mount a serious comeback, getting no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Golden Rams shot 31.8 percent from the field and just 6 of 20 from the three-point line.

Mohawk Valley shot 35.7 percent, but pulled in 20 offensive rebounds as they out-rebounded Anoka-Ramsey 50-32.

Mainville was the lone Golden Ram in double figures pouring in 29 points on 12 of 20 shooting and 4 of 4 from the free throw line.

Anoka-Ramsey will face Sullivan County at 1:00pm Friday in the consolation semifinals.
