Golden Rams Regain First in Southern Division

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Women's Basketball team regained first place in the MCAC Southern Division with a 70-62 win over Rochester Community and Technical College on Wednesday night in Rochester.

The Golden Rams now hold a one-game lead on Rochester heading into the final two games of the season.

If the Golden Rams earn one more victory, or Rochester suffers one more loss, they will clinch first place and host the Region XIIIA Tournament February 27-28.

The first quarter saw five ties and four lead changes as Rochester led 17-15.

A Makayla Paggen three-pointer to open the second quarter gave Anoka-Ramsey the lead, followed by a Lexus Hughes layup to push the lead to three points.

Rochester responded with the next four points, but another Paggen three put the Golden Rams back up one.

Rochester would retake the lead again and go up 28-25 at halftime.

The Yellowjackets extended their lead to five points with seven minutes to play in the third period and led 36-33 before a 5-0 Golden Ram spurt would result in the 14th lead change of the game.

With the score tied 42-42, Za'Keea Sa'eed-El would connect on a layup followed by a Rashonna Thomas layup and Anoka-Ramsey would lead by four.

Rochester would fight back to tie the score at 49 apiece entering the fourth quarter.

The Golden Rams scored the first ten points of the fourth quarter, with four different players contributing after a three-point play from Sa'eed-El.

Rochester used a 5-0 spurt to pull back within five points with 6:30 to play.

Lexus Hughes connected on a field goal to put the lead back to seven, but another 5-0 run by the Yellowjackets pulled them within two with 3:56 left.

Thomas would make three of four free throws and Sa'eed-El would find her way to the rim for another layup and Anoka-Ramsey led 68-61 with 1:27 left.

Rochester would fail to score on the their next two possessions and Thomas would make two more free throws to secure the win.

Anoka-Ramsey shot 40 percent overall including 6 of 20 from the three-point line.

Rochester shot just 34.3 percent, 3 of 15 from beyond the arc.

Sa'eed-El led all scorers with 17 points to go with seven rebounds.

Hughes finished with a double-double notching 14 points and ten rebounds.

Thomas scored 12 poinots making 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

Daron Mainville chipped in with ten points.

The Golden Rams will host Ridgewater on Saturday, February 13 at 1:00pm.
