Baseball Defeats Central Lakes 2-1, 7-2

A second consecutive doubleheader sweep — two more victories — enabled Anoka-Ramsey to improve its MCAC-Central Division record to five wins in six games April 20.

Against Central Lakes College in Brainerd, the team took a 2-1 first-game victory in 10 innings, then came back in the second game to complete the sweep with a 7-2 win in seven.

A sacrifice fly by center fielder Mylo Hommes scored designated runner Austin Greiner [for catcher Justin Reeves] from third with what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the 10th.  Reeves, thrust into the lead-off position with the absence of Brent Tholen who was ill, opened the top of the 10th with a Texas-League hit.

In Honey Badger-like fashion, the determined Reeves did not stop running upon

reaching first and used his motorboat-like legs to turn a single into a double when two Central Lakes players became entangled near the ball, trying to make the catch.

Right-hander Gabe Kastenmeier threw the first eight innings, giving up one run and just two hits.Kastenmeier, in fact, had a no-hitter going into the fifth before giving up back-to-back singles. Zack Waalen came on in relief and struck out the first three Central Lakes batters he faced in the ninth, but had to rely on a pair game-saving catches in the 10th inning by Hommes deep in center field and Mike Zimbeck in deep left field — with runners on base — to get the win.

In the second game, Anoka-Ramsey jumped to a 6-0 lead during the first three innings and did not score again until the sixth when Joe Lewis collected his third hit of the game, a solo blast over the right-center field barrier. Zimbeck also had three hits in this contest to finish with a four-hit day at the plate.

On the mound for game two was freshman left-hander Tanner Kinney. Supported by the big early lead, Kinney cruised through six innings, scattering six hits, while striking out five. He gave way to Andrew Brown, who closed out the seventh to help secure Anoka-Ramsey's 15th win overall this season.
