Ryan Holmgren was hired as the Head Baseball Coach in the summer of 2024, with the 2025 season being his first leading the Golden Ram program.
Coach Holmgren arrives after the departure of Jason Saulsbury who served as head coach for eight years.
Holmgren most recently served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Concordia-St. Paul. While with the Golden Bears, Coach Holmgren was in charge of the catchers and outfielders, formulted defensive game plans, and served as the first base coach. CSP won 29 games in 2024 - the fourth most in the school's 25 years as a Division II program. CSP finished fourth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference postseason tournament after being picked 11th in the preseason poll.
Prior to CSP, Holmgren served as the Head Baseball Coach at Elk River High School for 12 years where his teams compiled a 130-105 overall record. In 2014 the Elks won the Section 7AAA Championship and finished fourth in the MSHSL State Tournament. In his 12 years at Elk River the program produced 34 college players including two NCAA Division I players.
Holmgren is a 1993 graduate of St. Francis High School, and an Anoka-Ramsey alum having played baseball for the Golden Rams before finishing his collegiate schooling at Bemidji State.
"It is with great pride that I accept the position of head baseball coach for the Golden Rams," said Holmgren. "This institution is where I started my college career, where I grew as a college student and young man and where I met some of the best friends I have today. I owe a lot to Anoka-Ramsey and the baseball program. It means a great deal to now lead this program that I once played for. Our goal is to get Anoka-Ramsey Baseball back in the conversation of top junior college baseball programs in this region."
Coach Holmgren and Coach Saulsbury were teammates at Anoka-Ramsey, and both played for previous coach Tom Yelle. Said Holmgren, "Coach Saulsbury and I have a long history together. To take over this program from a guy that used to be a teammate and has always been a friend is not anything we take lightly. I want to personally thank Jason for the countless hours and hard work that he put into the program. One of our goals will be making this program something that Coach Saulsbury can continue to be proud of, along with the coach we both played for, Tom Yelle."
"We are thrilled to have Ryan back at Anoka-Ramsey, this time as Head Baseball Coach," said Director of Athletics Jessica Pelzel. "His extensive history coaching, particularly as a head coach, and his knowledge of baseball in the area will be vital as we look to take another step in advancing Golden Ram baseball."
Holmgren and his daughter Reese reside in Elk River.
