Women's Soccer Outlasts Lake Superior, Advances to Final

The Anoka-Ramsey Women's Soccer team, playing shorthanded with ten players, outlasted the Lake Superior Ice Hawks by a score of 2-1 in extra time in the NJCAA Region XIII Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon.

Battling the rain and cold weather, the Golden Rams had limited scoring chances in the first half thanks to a packed-in Lake Superior defense.

But Sunasia Pargo was able to get free for a goal in the 43rd minute off a Sierra Dehmer assist as Anoka-Ramsey took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Ice Hawks went on the attack in the second half and had numerous scoring chances, but Anoka-Ramsey goalkeeper Aryanna Jiron kept the ball out of the net until a tough angle shot found its way over the Golden Ram keeper and into the top corner of the net late in regulation to tie the score.

The teams battled to a draw after the first ten minute extra time period, before Sierra Dehmer received a well placed pass from Emily Reimann early in the second extra time session for the game-winner.

"We're very proud of the girls' effort tonight," said head coach Tim Notz.  "We once again played shorthanded and our ladies had to play through cold, rainy, and windy conditions.  We have to credit Lake Superior since they changed their setup against us tonight.  That made it harder for us, but our team showed a lot of character and we were able to grind out the win in overtime."  Added Notz, "Tonight's win will be a great memory for the team and we are looking forward to the Region final on Saturday."

Anoka-Ramsey will travel to Rochester to take on the top-seeded Yellowjackets on Saturday, October 23 at 4:00pm.
