Women's Basketball Goes 2-0 over Opening Weekend

The Anoka-Ramsey Women's Basketball team recorded two convincing wins to open their season, beating Madison 78-59 on Friday night before routing Gogebic 120-60 on Saturday.

The Golden Rams and Wolfpack battled for the first three quarters before Anoka-Ramsey blew the game open in the fourth.

With the score tied at 51 apiece to start the fourth, Anoka-Ramsey held Madison to just two points in the first eight minutes of the fourth building a 75-53 lead.

Chloe Vezies opened the period with a three, followed by two Charo Nickens layups and another three by Vezies.

Abby Howe added to the three-point shooting with one of her own, followed by a Bonita Franco three and layups by Raiyne Adams and Nickens.

The Golden Rams forced 25 turnovers and assisted on 14 of their 26 made field goals.

Adams led all scorers with 21 points while adding seven rebounds.

Nickens had 13 points to go with ten rebounds.

Vezies scored 12 points making 4 of 7 from three.

On Saturday the Golden Rams simply couldn't miss, or at least it felt like it.

Anoka-Ramsey made nine threes in the first quarter, and 13 shots overall to lead 37-19.

The second quarter was similar as Anoka-Ramsey hit six of nine three-point attempts and outscored the Samsons 29-14.

The halftime break wasn't enough to cool down the hot shooting as Anoka-Ramsey opened the third quarter making their first eight shots, seven of them from behind the arc.

Five different players made threes in the opening third period stretch and the Golden Rams finished the quarter making 9 of 13 from three.

Anoka-Ramsey shot 51.2 percent overall, and 56.3 percent from three in making 27 of 48 attempts.

Nickens had 20 points and 14 rebounds for her second straight double-double.

Vezies scored 18 points making 6 of 8 from three.

Ariana Owens scored 17 points knocking down five threes.

Adams finished with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Thirteen players scored in the game with ten players making at least one three-point field goal.

Anoka-Ramsey is 2-0 overall and will travel to Central Lakes on Wednesday, November 13.
