Women's Basketball Pulls Away In Second Half for Win

The Anoka-Ramsey women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Rochester Community and Technical College 83-73.  The win improved the Golden Rams to 4-0 in conference, and 15-3 overall.

Mikayla Homola led the offensive attack with 25 points.  Raiyne Adams scored 17 points for Anoka-Ramsey.  Charo Nickens contributed 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

The first quarter saw the Golden Rams get off to a rough start shooting only 8-20 from the field.  Rochester went 10-16 to take a 24-21 lead.  Alyssa Whitson paced RCTC with eight points, while Mikayla Homola scored seven points to lead Anoka-Ramsey.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the second quarter, as they combined to score eight field goals.  Rochester went 8-10 from the free throw line, and pushed their lead to seven with 2:30 to go.  The Yellowjackets went into the half with a 39-34 lead.

Early in the 3rd quarter, RCTC pushed their lead to ten points on Anoka-Ramsey, 46-36.  Raiyne Adams would trim the lead with a 3-pointer and free throw to 46-40.  A jump shot by Grace Riley would push the RCTC lead back to eight, but Anoka-Ramsey would go on a 15-0 run to take a 7-point lead.  The Golden Rams would go into the 4th with a 60-56 lead.

The 4th quarter saw Anoka-Ramsey start on a 12-3 run to push the lead to 13 points.  Anoka-Ramsey pushed their lead to 80-63, and held off a late RCTC charge for the victory.

The Yellowjackets committed 29 turnovers, with 19 of them coming in the 2nd half.

Mikayla Homola picked nine steals in the contest, in addition to her 25 points.  Over the past two games she has a total of 15 steals.

Charo Nickens is averaging 13 rebounds a game in conference action.

The Golden Rams return to action as they go on the road to face Western Technical College on Wednesday, January 23.
