Women's Basketball Beats Hibbing, Falls to NDSCS

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Women's Basketball team earned a weekend split heading into conference play by defeating Hibbing Community College 83-63, and falling to D1 NDSCS 87-47.

In Friday night's tilt vs. Hibbing the Golden Rams used a big third quarter to pull away from the Cardinals.

The taller Hibbing team was able to take advantage of their size in the first two quarters to take a 35-32 lead into halftime, thanks to a 15-5 edge in rebounding during the second quarter.

But the Golden Rams quickness would prevail in the third period as they forced 15 Hibbing turnovers in outscoring the Cardinals 31-11 to take a 63-46 lead into the fourth.

Hibbing managed just nine field goal attempts in the period while Anoka-Ramsey shot 10 of 19 including 3 of 6 from long range, and made 8 of 9 free throws.

The Anoka-Ramsey lead extended to as many as 25 in the fourth quarter.

The Golden Rams shot 42 percent overall and made 19 of 22 free throws in the win.

Hibbing committed 29 turnovers.

Rashonna Thomas poured in 33 points, making 10 of 23 shots from the field and 10 of 11 free throws while also coming away with eight steals.

Lateah Turmon scored 18 points.

Alyssa Correll notched 15 points, and Amanda Lindsay chipped in with ten points.

On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Rams faced NJCAA D1 North Dakota State College of Science who entered the game with a 14-2 record.

Anoka-Ramsey hung tight throughout the first period and trailed 19-12 after the first.

The Wildcats size and quickness were too much to overcome in the second quarter as Anoka-Ramsey shot just 1 for 9 in being outscored 23-6 in the period.

NDSCS extended the lead in the third quarter, and the Golden Rams were unable to recover.

Thomas scored 16 points, Lindsay chipped in with 11.

The Golden Rams finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7-6 overall record.

MCAC Southern Division play begins on Wednesday, January 11 as the Golden Rams travel to Western Tech for a 5:45pm tip.
