Women's Basketball Splits Weekend Games

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Women's Basketball team split their final two games before the holiday break this past weekend.

On Friday night, the Golden Rams played a fantastic first half vs. NJCAA Division I opponent Bismarck State, but went cold in the third quarter and ultimately fell 82-68.

Anoka-Ramsey led 18-16 after the first quarter thanks to high pressure defense and offensive rebounding.  The Golden Rams attempted nine more shots than Bismarck in the period to help offset shooting 34.8 percent.

A three-pointer from Laya Sath pushed the lead to 28-20 with 7:40 to play in the second quarter, then two free throws from Biftu Tula extended the lead to ten points, 32-22 with 6:18 left.

Bismarck State would go on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 34 apiece but the Golden Rams scored the final eight points of the quarter to go up 42-34 at halftime.

The third quarter started with Anoka-Ramsey jumping ahead 50-36 thanks to layups from Rashonna Thomas, Alyssa Correll, Lateah Turmon, and Dariel Lipscomb.

But the Mystics would answer, quickly, by scoring 19 straight points and taking a 57-52 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bismarck State scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and Anoka-Ramsey was unable to recover.

Anoka-Ramsey forced 24 Bismarck turnovers and held a 17-11 edge in offensive rebounds, but shot just 33.8 percent overall, and just 3 of 25 from the three-point line, while the Mystics connected on 46 percent of their shots.

Thomas scored 20 points and pulled in 13 rebounds.

Correll scored 13 points, and Lipscomb added 12 points.

The Golden Rams responded in a big way on Saturday afternoon, trouncing Vermilion 102-50.

Anoka-Ramsey jumped ahead 18-6 and led 28-13 after the first quarter by shooting 57.9 percent in the period.

The second quarter continued the onslaught with a 32-9 edge as Anoka-Ramsey once again connected on 57.9 percent of their shots and held Vermilion to just 28.6 percent.

A three-pointer from Correll to start the third period would spark an 11-0 run to push the lead to 71-24, and the Golden Rams wouldn't look back.

Anoka-Ramsey shot 50 percent for the game and held Vermilion to 36.8 percent.

Vermilion would commit 31 turnovers, 21 of them steals by the Golden Rams.

Thomas scored 26 points on 9 of 19 shooting.

Turmon and Correll each scored 16 points with Turmon dishing out seven assists.

Amanda Lindsay scored 12 points making four from beyond the arc.

Lipscomb recorded a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds, 11 on the offensive end.
