Women's Basketball Picks Up Two Wins

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Women's Basketball team completed a four game sweep of the MCAC Northern Division by defeating Mesabi Range 74-67 on Friday evening, then Vermilion 91-44 on Saturday afternoon.

In Friday night's contest vs Mesabi the Golden Rams used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Norse.

Mesabi jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter but a 12-2 run put the Golden Rams up 21-19.

Mesabi would retake the lead and go up 29-23 until the Golden Rams picked up the pace and went on an extended 18-2 run to go up 41-31 at halftime.

The third quarter was all Mesabi on the offensive end.

After the Golden Rams went up 44-33 Mesabi used a 16-5 run to tie the score at 49 apiece.

Anoka-Ramsey would go scoreless the rest of the period and Mesabi would extend the lead to 57-49 heading into the fourth.

Sophomore Rashonna Thomas scored the first nine Golden Rams points of the fourth quarter and Anoka-Ramsey trimmed the deficit to 62-58 with 6:22 left.

A Dariel Lipscomb layup followed by two Lateah Turmon free throws would tie the game at 62.

After a Mesabi free throw, Amanda Lindsay would hit a jumper to give Anoka-Ramsey a 64-63 lead they would not relinquish as Lindsay would score five more points in a 11-2 run to seal the game.

Anoka-Ramsey held a 12-7 edge in offensive rebounds and made 22 free throws to just seven for Mesabi.

Kieara Hunter led the Golden Ram scoring with 19 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Thomas added 16 points.

Turmon and Lipscomb each had ten points.

Saturday's game vs. Vermilion was all Anoka-Ramsey right from the tip.

The Golden Rams scored the first six points and led 17-3 after the first quarter holding Vermilion to just 1 of 11 shooting in the period.

Anoka-Ramsey extended the lead to 38-17 at halftime and then ran away with the game in the third period by shooting 14 for 19 including 4 of 7 from three and forcing nine turnovers.

The Golden Rams led by as many as 49 points in the game.

Anoka-Ramsey forced 34 Vermilion turnovers and had 30 assists on 35 made field goals.

Thomas scored 19 points.

Alyssa Correll scored 14 along with 14 from Hunter.

Lipscomb recorded 13 points and nine rebounds.

Laya Sath chipped in 11 points making 3 of 6 three-pointers.

The Golden Rams improve to 5-4 on the season.
