Men's Basketball Opens Season 1-1; Larson Gets Win #200

The Anoka-Ramsey Men's Basketball team opened up the 2019-2020 season with a home split, losing to Madison on Friday night 103-88 before dispatching Gogebic 86-77 on Saturday afternoon.

The win over Gogebic was #200 for head coach Ron Larson while at Anoka-Ramsey.  Coach Larson also recorded 473 wins as a high school head coach.

On Friday night the Golden Rams hung close with Madison before the Wolfpack used a 16-0 run to push a seven point lead to 23 over a three minute stretch late in the game.

Anoka-Ramsey led by ten, 27-17, in the first half after a Nashiem Lozier three.  The Wolfpack outscored the Golden Rams 33-13 over the final ten minutes of the half to lead 50-40 at the break.

Aonka-Ramsey shot 41.4 percent overall, and Madison connected on 55.6 percent.  The Golden Rams knocked down 12 three-point attempts finishing 12-37.

Lozier had 19 points and ten rebounds, shooting 7 of 12 overall and 3 of 7 from three.

D.J. Pettigrew had 17 points on 7 of 12 from the field.

Roland Washington and Terrell Fountain each had 14 points.

On Saturday the Golden Rams built a 21 point lead in the second half before Gogebic made a late run, but it wasn't enough to overcome.

Both teams started slow, with Anoka-Ramsey leading 18-13 ten minutes into the game.

Anoka-Ramsey led by five, 25-20, with six minutes to go in the half but closed on a 25-15 run to lead 50-35 at halftime.

The Golden Rams steadily expanded the lead in the second half, going ahead by 21 with 4:30 to play.

Anoka-Ramsey shot 52.3 percent overall including 15 of 26 in the second half.

Lozier scored 19 points to lead the team in scoring. Washington scored 16 on 6 of 9 from the field and 3 of 4 from three.

Pettigrew and Fountain each had 11 points, with Beau Nelson chipping in ten to round out the double-digit scorers.

The Golden Rams are 1-1 overall, and will travel to Central Lakes on Wednesday, November 13 for a 7:30pm tip.
