Men's Basketball Advances to Region Final; Defeated by MN West

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team advanced to the Region XIII championship game for the second straight season, but fell 89-62 to Minnesota West.

In the quarterfinals the Golden Rams jumped out early against Mesabi Range and rolled to a 99-69 win.

Six players scored in double figures led by Jackson Odegard (22 points).

James Lloyd (18), DeAndre Jones (15), Justin Castro (12), Chris Morgan (11), and Kevin Schramm (10) each reached double figures as Anoka-Ramsey shot 57.6 percent overall and made 13 of 28 from the three-point line.

 

In the semifinals the Golden Rams faced off against familiar playoff foe Vermilion and came away with an 86-69 win.

Anoka-Ramsey took a 44-33 lead into halftime on the strength of 14 points from Schramm and ten from Jones in the first half.

Vermilion managed just 33.3 percent shooting in the opening period.

Vermilion pulled within ten, 48-38, before layups from Morgan, Lloyd, and Castro pushed the lead back up to 16 and Vermilion was unable to get the deficit within single digits the rest of the afternoon.

Schramm scored 29 points and hauled in 17 rebounds.

Castro finished with 15 points, and Jones chipped in 13.

 

In the championship the Golden Rams squared off against Minnesota West, a team they split with in the regular season.

Anoka-Ramsey took a 28-17 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half before an 8-0 MN West spurt cut the deficit to three.

Jones knocked down a three to stop the run, but the Bluejays responded with 11 straight points to take a 36-31 lead.

Schramm would score inside, Morgan hit a three, and Schramm scored again to put the Golden Rams back up by two and the teams entered halftime tied at 38.

From there the formidable Golden Ram offense hit a wall.

MN West scored the first 13 points of the second half as Anoka-Ramsey struggled to knock down shots.

Anoka-Ramsey managed just four points in the first ten minutes as the MN West lead continued to grow.

The Golden Rams were unable to get the offense flowing and the Bluejays left with the win.

Anoka-Ramsey, who entered the game as one of the nation's leading three-point shooting teams, made just 1 of 16 attempts in the second half.

Schramm scored 22 points.

Morgan scored 13 while adding 13 rebounds.

Castro finished with 13 points.

Schramm and Castro were each named to the All-Tournament team.

Anoka-Ramsey ends the season 19-11 overall.
