Men's Basketball Builds Big Lead, Holds on for Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team built a 22 point lead early in the second half and held on to defeat Dakota County Tech 81-73 on Wednesday night.

The Golden Rams rode a hot-shooting first half to a 46-34 halftime lead knocking down 10 of 19 three-point attempts (52.6 percent) in the half while holding DCTC to just 32.5 percent overall shooting.

Trailing 25-21 with nine minutes left in the half Anoka-Ramsey went on a 17-1 run to go ahead 38-26.

Layups by Jarrett Baptiste and Malik El-Amin sparked the run which included eight points from Jackson Odegard along with a three from Chris Morgan and a layup by Justin Castro.

El-Amin beat the halftime buzzer with a three going the length of the court in 3.9 seconds for the halftime margin.

A 15-5 run to open the second half put Anoka-Ramsey up 61-39 with 15:40 to play.

DCTC scored a quick eight points to pull within 61-47 and steadily chipped away at the Golden Ram lead, pulling with 72-65 with 3:35 left.

Castro converted a layup in transition, then after a DCTC layup, Kevin Schramm drove and scored to keep the lead at nine.

After two DCTC free throws, Morgan scored and got fouled, making the free throw to put Anoka-Ramsey up 79-69 with just under two minutes to play.

DCTC scored the next four points to pull within six, 79-73 with 54 seconds left.  Two missed free throws from the Golden Rams gave DCTC a chance to trim the lead further but a key defenisve stop and two free throws from Schramm sealed the win.

Anoka-Ramsey finished the game 31-73 from the field (42.5 percent) but made just 1 of 11 threes in the second half to finish 11-30 (36.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Golden Rams held a 47-38 edge in rebounds including 12 on the offensive end.

Ramose Riddley and Baptise provided ten rebounds apiece to lead the effort on the boards.

Schramm finished with 21 points on 8 of 17 shooting and seven rebounds.

Morgan scored 11 first half points and finished with 19 on 6 of 9 shooting and 3 of 4 from the three-point line while adding six rebounds.

The Golden Rams will host Itasca on Friday, December 1st at 7:30pm.
