Golden Rams Stumble vs Madison, Defeat Gogebic

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team earned another weekend split to even their record at 2-2 overall.

On Friday night, the Golden Rams faced Madison College and fell 69-67 in overtime after holding a late lead in regulation.

Leading 62-61 Anoka-Ramsey got a key defensive stop with ten seconds left, but a costly turnover led to a foul and Madison made one of two free throws to send the game to the extra period.

The Wolfpack scored the first four points of overtime to lead 66-62 before two free throws from Justin Castro cut the deficit to 66-64 with 1:29 to play.

After two Wolfpack free throws, Malik El-Amin connected from long range to pull withing 68-67 with 38 second left.  Anoka-Ramsey forced a turnover with 16 seconds to play, but couldn't convert and Madison finished the game making 1 of 2 free throws with 2 seconds remaining.

Neither team led by more than five points throughout the entire game as both defenses held their opponent to low shooting percentages and forced turnovers.

Anoka-Ramsey shot just 40.3 percent overall and made 9 of 26 three-point attempts while Madison finished at 47.4 percent and hit 6 of 19 threes.

Madison committed 20 turnovers to 21 for Anoka-Ramsey.

Kevin Schramm led the Golden Rams with 20 points making 7 of 16 shots including 4 of 8 threes.

El-Amin scored 12 points knocking down 4 of 6 from beyond the arc to go with six assists.

Castro finished with 11 points, and James Lloyd chipped in ten.

On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Ram offense exploded to beat Gogebic 106-90 in a game filled with three-point shots.

Anoka-Ramsey finished the night knocking down 14 of 24 from downtown and shot a staggering 63.5 percent for the game (40-63) including 75.9 percent in the second half.

Gogebic had hot hands as well making 52.3 percent of their shots including 18 of 33 from the three-point line.

A 12-4 Anoka-Ramsey run extended a 38-33 lead to 50-37 with just three minutes left in the first half before Gogebic finished the half on an 11-1 run to pull within 51-48 at halftime.

The lead was built back up to ten, 79-69 after a Kevin Schramm jumper, but Gogebic answered again to pull within 89-85 with five minutes to play.

From there it was all Anoka-Ramsey as Schramm converted a layup, followed by a James Lloyd jumper, a three from Lloyd, and a layup from Justin Castro to build the lead back to 13 at 98-85 with three minutes left.

Schramm recorded a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds making 10 of 13 shots against the shorter Gogebic defense.

Lloyd scored 24 points making 6 of 6 from beyond the arc and 8 for 8 overall.

Chris Morgan scored 23 points making 10 of 13 shots and 3 of 4 threes.

Castro finished with 15 points, and Malik El-Amin scored 12.

The Golden Rams will return to action on Wednesday, November 22nd when they host Dakota County Technical College at 7:00pm.
